Although they do not typically represent an immediate health concern, noticeable veins can leave the sufferer looking less than their best, even dealing with negative self-esteem. Varicose veins are a common condition, especially among older people and the elderly. If you have varicose veins, you have likely started looking for ways to minimize their appearance or eliminate them completely. Fortunately, we offer a number of treatments at our vein treatment center.
What are Varicose Veins?
Varicose veins normally appear as bluish, bulging chords that can be seen just beneath the surface of the skin. Varicose veins usually affect the feet and legs. Visibly twisted and swollen veins are often accompanied by patches of spider veins, a type of superficial vein. They can certainly be quite disfiguring and painful, but they are typically harmless. However, varicose veins can be tender when inflamed and can actually prevent circulation, leading to itchy skin, aching, and swollen ankles.
A lot of people suffer from varicose veins, and the condition can be inherited. Women are more likely to develop varicose veins than men. About 23 percent of all Americans are affected by varicose veins.
Causes of Varicose Veins
Your arteries help transport oxygenated blood from your lungs to every part of your body. These blood vessels possess thick layers of elastic tissue or muscle. In order to return blood back to the heart, your veins use neighboring muscles and one-way valves. When blood moves through your veins, the valves prevent blood from flowing back through.
Varicose veins do not function properly and cannot perform their job to prevent blood from pooling, making it hard for muscles to move blood downstream. Instead of the blood flowing through a succession of valves, it begins pooling, which increases pressure and the chances of congestion. This leads to the vein twisting and bulging.
