Before diagnosing any type of venous insufficiency, our doctor at The Vein Center will make sure to take your medical history and give you an exam. You may also have an imaging test done that looks at blood flow and the structure of your leg veins. It checks the speed and direction of blood flow in the blood vessel. To learn all the facts about venous insufficiency, simply book an appointment at our office.
What is Venous Insufficiency?
Chronic venous insufficiency occurs when your leg veins don’t allow blood flow back up to your heart. Normally, the valves in your veins make sure that blood flows toward your heart. However, when these valves don’t work well, blood can also flow backwards. This can cause blood to collect (pool) in your legs.
Understanding venous insufficiency and its causes can help improve your health and prevent its symptoms. Venous insufficiency is most often caused by either blood clots or varicose veins. In healthy veins, there is a continuous flow of blood from the limbs back toward the heart. Valves within the veins of the legs help prevent the backflow of blood. The most common causes of venous insufficiency are previous cases of blood clots and varicose veins.
Some of its symptoms may seem like other health conditions. These symptoms include swelling in your legs or ankles, tight feeling in your calves or itchy, painful legs. This pain when walking stops when you rest and gets better when you raise your legs. Patients suffering from this condition may also experience painful leg cramps or spasms, varicose veins, leg ulcers that are hard to treat, and brown or thickening of the skin, often near the ankles.
We will create a treatment based on your age, overall health, and medical history and how serious your condition is, among other factors. It will also depend on how well you handle medications and treatments.
