Deep vein thrombosis is a medical condition that is caused when a blood clot forms in one of the body’s deep veins. While the blood clots that cause deep vein thrombosis can occur nearly anywhere in the body, they most commonly form in the leg veins. If anything prevents the blood from clotting and circulating properly, then a blood clot can form and cause deep vein thrombosis. Blood Vessel Damage
Damage to the wall of a blood vessel causes it to be much more narrow than normal. The blood vessel can even become blocked if there is enough damage. Narrowing or blockage of a blood vessel greatly increases your risk of developing blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. There are several common conditions that can damage the blood vessels, including varicose veins, broken bones and muscle injuries.
Proper blood flow is required in order to prevent deep vein thrombosis, but this is not possible if you are not active. Walking increases your blood flow and helps the blood circulate evenly through the body. Too much inactivity will cause most of your blood to collect in your lower body, which greatly increases your risks for blood clots in the legs. Several precautions need to be taken if you are even going to be immobile for an extended period of time to ensure that you do not develop deep vein thrombosis.
A woman’s body starts to produce more estrogen than normal while they are pregnant. Estrogen is known to make blood clot much easier than normal. While this is the body’s way of ensuring that you do not lose too much blood during childbirth, it can vastly increase your chances of getting blood clots and deep vein thrombosis. Getting up and walking around more than normal should be enough to prevent deep vein thrombosis while pregnant.
The veins in your legs need to be in good working order to help prevent blood clots, and this is much more difficult when you are obese. Any extra body weight puts more pressure on the leg veins, which makes it harder for them to properly circulate blood throughout the rest of the body. Losing weight is all that you need to do to reduce the pressure on your leg veins and greatly reduce your risk of developing deep vein thrombosis.
Medical or Genetic Conditions
There are several common medical conditions that are known to cause deep vein thrombosis. Some of these conditions include heart disease, rheumatoid arthritis, Hughes syndrome, thrombophilia and hepatitis. If you are diagnosed with a condition that is commonly known to cause deep vein thrombosis, then you need to be extra cautious when it comes to blood clots.
